Life in Japan

It’s been a while since I’ve really written anything. Without any real reason, I was suddenly inclined to set up a blog. Maybe I’ve just gotten bored, but I doubt that. It may be more because vacation is finally starting here, お盆, and it means that I have some more time to do whatever the hell I please. Of course, this means going to Comiket and the Kansai region. These are things that I can definitely not miss out on while I’m still here.

In five days, I will have officially been in Japan for 3 months. Honestly speaking, I’m surprised that it has passed so quickly already. Work has kept me somewhat busy, and I’ve been trying to learn as much as I possibly can. This goes beyond just learning from work. I’ve had the luxury of being able to passively learn about Japan and Japanese culture. The one weak-point I do want to be able to cover before I go home is my low Japanese skill. People have said that my Japanese is pretty good, but it’s still shy of being able to effectively communicate with others. At this point, it’s more of a matter of learning more vocabulary and less about learning grammar.

One interesting thing I’ve found about learning Japanese is that the grammar is not the hardest part of the language. Nor is writing, truth be told. At least with reading and writing, you’re given the time to think things through and use the right words. Speaking, on the other hand, is a whole different story. Despite actually learning quite a bit, my vocabulary dumbs down significantly when I’m put on the spot and have to say things. Hopefully that will change as I get more comfortable about speaking.
